Picking the proper storage unit size is a challenge to many people in the business world today. And so they either end up with either a too large or too small unit, leaving them frustrated. The main reason for this is that most people think that just doing a rough estimate will give them the size they want. However, that is not an effective method for choosing the correct storage size. If you want to pick correctly, you need to ask yourself some questions. Read them below.

How Many Items Do You Need To Store?

When you know how much stuff need storage, you can easily determine how much space is needed. So first, take an inventory of everything that needs to go into the storage unit. Then, stack them in an empty room and measure the amount of space they have occupied to determine the space needed. This method is effective for getting the correct storage unit size, as tedious as it may sound.

Will You Need to Add More Stuff In The Future?

Sometimes, you may later find that you need to add more stuff into the storage unit. Maybe you forgot some stuff while packing, or perhaps your new space is not enough for everything you have. That will only be possible when you have extra room for storage. Unless you are very confident that you won't be needing more space in the future, it is safer to rent a unit with more space.

Do You Have Oddly Shaped Or Fragile Items?

Another factor that determines the storage space needed is the shape and fragility of the items at hand. If all the items fit in boxes, you can stack them up nicely in the storage unit. Unfortunately, that is not the same case with mirrors, couches or sculptures, as you cannot stack them up on each other. That means you need more space for such items to fit in the unit and to avoid damage.

What Sizes Are Available?

After you have clear answers to these three questions, next, you need to know the sizes available. First, there are small sizes, which are about the size of a closet or a walk-in closet. Medium sizes ones are almost the same size as a large closet and half of a one-car garage respectively. Lastly, there are also large and extra-large storage units, ranging from a one-car garage to a two-car garage space.

With this guide, you can get a storage unit that fits your needs. If you are still unsure about which size to select, talk to the storage unit company for further assistance before buying.
